Nitin Shankar's wondrous journey from retired electronics engineer at age 71 to working with laser machines cutting diamonds began when he met Dr Bernold Richerzhagen, CEO and founder of Synova SA in 2010. The scarcity of potable water in both urban and rural settings requires that key decision-makers in water management explore innovative and timely solutions. However, the range of solutions currently under consideration are not well understood or documented in the literature. To fill this gap, this study used in-depth, semi-structured, open-ended interviews (n=7) to explore water managers knowledge and reasoning about solutions to water shortage, including practical considerations about cost and sustainability of water conservation and conversion. Findings revealed that water managers knowledge of potential solutions largely revolve around conservation and desalination of brackish water to produce short-term potable water. Water managers recommend that investment in and expansion of existing desalination technologies like reverse osmosis constitute a promising solution to the growing crisis of global water shortages. This study provided a preliminary understanding of practical barriers and facilitators considered by water managers in their search for long-term water management solutions.

This proceeding provides the papers and discussion results of a two-day workshop that was organized at International Water Management Institute (IWMI) office in Addis Ababa during the period of February 6-8, 2009 in relation to CPWF Project 19 – Improved water and land management in the Ethiopian Highlands and its impact on downstream stakeholders dependent on the Blue Nile. Short title: Upstream Downstream (USDS) in the Nile. The project is being under implementation during the last one and half years in partnership with various institutions that include International Livestock Research Institute, Cornell University, Omdurman Islamic University-UNESCO Chair in Water Resources, Addis Ababa University, Bahir Dar University, Amhara Regional Agricultural Research Institute and Forum for Social Studies. The main aims of the workshop had been: Bring together key stakeholders relevant to the project; Present, debate and validate the intermediate results of the project; Disseminate key results to wider audiences through workshop participating stakeholders; Follow up on the progress of the project and plan remaining tasks of the project. Since its inception in the 1960s, the earth art movement has sought to make visible the elusive presence of nature. Though most often associated with monumental land-based sculptures, earth art encompasses a wide range of media, from sculpture, body art performances, and installations to photographic interventions, public protest art, and community projects. In The Ethics of Earth Art, Amanda Boetzkes analyzes the development of the earth art movement, arguing that such diverse artists as Robert Smithson, Ana Mendieta, James Turrell, Jackie Brookner, Olafur Eliasson, Basia Irland, and Ichi Ikeda are connected through their elucidation of the earth as a domain of ethical concern. Boetzkes contends that in basing their works’ relationship to the natural world on receptivity rather than representation, earth artists take an ethical stance that counters both the instrumental view that seeks to master nature and the Romantic view that posits a return to a mythical state of unencumbered continuity with nature. By incorporating receptive surfaces into their work—film footage of glaring sunlight, an aperture in a chamber that opens to the sky, or a porous armature on which vegetation grows—earth artists articulate the dilemma of representation that nature presents. Revealing the fundamental difference between the human world and the earth, Boetzkes shows that earth art mediates the sensations of nature while allowing nature itself to remain irreducible to human signification.
