The Letter to the Romans and the Supersession Controversy

Supersessionism is deeply rooted in both Roman Catholic and Protestant theology and is as old as the church. It is the belief that the church is the new Israel, the true Israel, and as such has displaced or superseded ethnic Israel. Throughout the history of the church it has been commonly held that the covenants God made with Israel and the promises God gave to that nation now belong to the Christian church. The supersession controversy is not an obscure theological debate of interest only to a few Biblical scholars. It involves questions of fundamental importance. Does the God of the Christian Scriptures keep His promises? What are the rules that guide our interpretation of Scripture? Is there a connection between Christian theology and anti-Semitism in “Christian lands?” The Biblical focus of this controversy is the 11th chapter of the book of Romans. There the Apostle Paul courageously addresses the supersession issue. Tarrell invites the reader to feast on the riches of Paul’s teaching on the atonement (Romans 1-8) and to celebrate so great a salvation. But he also invites the reader to embrace Paul’s teaching about Israel (Romans 9-11). God’s gift of salvation is precious and is thoroughly explained in the first 8 chapters of Romans. But to prove the thesis of the book of Romans Paul tackles the most daunting problem of all, the apparent inability of God to fulfill the promises He made to the nation of Israel. Bringing up the problem of Israel is a gutsy move. But it is the problem that must be addressed.

Most Christians are able to present the Romans Road, but how many are intimately familiar with the entire book? Books are written with a message which is to be sought out and applied. If prayerfully studied, the book of Romans will prove to be sufficient for equipping God's child with biblical theology. My desire is to see people edified by the message of Romans just as God has used it to change my life. This exposition may aid teachers, leaders, missionaries or pastors who wish to go through Romans in an expository fashion. Study Questions are included at the back of the book. In writing this commentary, I have tried to be as loyal as possible to the text; therefore, the Greek Textus Receptus is the basis for this work. The accuracy and integrity of the King James translation is unparalleled, and it is the only English translation which has been used apart from my own rendering of the Greek New Testament. Topics include: Christian Liberty, Spiritual Baptism, the Christian and Government

The righteousness of God is transparent. God's righteousness cannot be substituted by anything. That is because His righteousness is different from the righteousness of man. We need to know what God's righteousness is, and we need to believe in it. God's righteousness is fundamentally different from human righteousness. The righteousness of mankind is like a filthy rag, but the righteousness of God is like a brilliant pearl shining forever. God's righteousness is the Truth that is absolutely needed by every sinner, transcending all ages. Our faith in the righteousness of God must be one that can be verified in the Word of Truth. Do you believe in the righteousness of God that is absolutely indispensable in these end times when the Lord's return is imminent? Do you want to believe in the perfect righteousness of God within the Word of Truth and meet the Lord? Have you ever met God's righteousness? You need to realize that God's righteousness is found in Jesus who worked in the gospel of the water and the Spirit. You must meet Jesus, who has become God's perfect righteousness, and you must believe in Him.
