In this powerful book, journalist and film maker John Pilger strips away the layers of deception, dissembling language and omission that prevent us from understanding how the world really works. From the invisible corners of Tony Blair's Britain to Burma, Vietnam, Australia, South Africa and the illusions of the 'media age', power, he argues, has its own agenda. Unchallenged, it operates to protect its interests with a cynical disregard for people - shaping, and often devastating, millions of lives. By unravelling the hidden histories of contemporary events, Pilger allows us to read between the lines. He also celebrates the eloquent defiance and courage of those who resist oppression and give us hope for the future. Tenaciously researched and written with passion and wit, Hidden Agendas will change the way you see the world.
In our news-hungry society, where CNN is considered a staple of primetime viewing, journalists have become celebrities and often, political proxies. To a large degree, our world is shaped by their commentaries on everything from war to health care to trade. Hidden Agendas: How Journalists Influence the News is a no-holds-barred expos of how the opinions of reporters decidedly shape the information we consider news.
We like to pretend that hidden agendas are just for self-important bosses or egotistical politicians, but we all have them. Deep down, we all have a secret plan for getting from where we are to where we want to be, even if we refuse to admit it to ourselves. And if our hidden agendas aren’t enough, we wear masks to obscure the truth even more. We put on these masks—like religion, appearance, power, politics, or protection—to drive our agendas. But all of this leaves us feeling phony, ashamed, guilty, and afraid. It’s killing us and hurting those we love. But for most of us, it will be a cold day in a hot place before we will be fully honest with anyone else. There is so much more to life than hiding, pretending, and never being loved. In fact, there is already one person who sees behind the masks we wear and the hidden agendas that drive us. It does no good to tell God that you’re sick when you’re drunk, that you love him when you don’t, or that you didn’t steal and eat an apple (with apple juice dripping down your chin). God always recognizes and loves the “you” behind the mask. So what can we do about the hidden agendas we have and the masks we wear? How can we gather the courage to be real? “Being real” has to start with your relationship with your heavenly Father. God already knows you inside and out. But God doesn’t know you in order to “out” you to your friends. His unconditional love for his own is reason we can pray to our Father without fear of rejection or judgment. Knowing God’s love, knowing that your heavenly Father is for you not against you is the only reason to give up your masks and develop the type of authentic relationships you never thought you could have.

‘Forget the label “free trade agreement”. The TPPA, under negotiation between New Zealand, the USA and ten other countries, is a direct assault on our right to decide our own future.’ In this hard-hitting BWB Text, Professor Jane Kelsey picks apart the current negotiations surrounding the proposed Trans-Pacific Partnership Agreement (TPPA) and comes to some disturbing conclusions. Such a treaty, she says in this new work, has little credible economic rationale but could have potentially dangerous effects on our ability to decide for ourselves how we address the economic, environmental, social and Treaty challenges of the twenty-first century. At a time of constitutional review, the secrecy surrounding the TPPA negotiations raises hard questions about the future shape of New Zealand.

In 1992, Derek Lewis – a highly successful television executive – was approached by a firm of head-hunters about the possibility of running the UK Prison Service. As the first Director General of the new semi-autonomous prison agency, and the only high-profile outsider ever hired to head the service, he was soon caught up in the web of self-interest and hidden agendas being pursued by politicians and public services alike. Prisons were alien and often violent places where antiquated conditions – overcrowding, slopping-out, drugs and intermittent rioting – co-existed with luxurious new blocks, the costs of which had spiralled out of control. Too often management and politicians had given in to the demands of prisoners and the prison officers’ union. Still more bizarre were the ponderous rituals and circumlocutions of the Home Office, where debate displaced action and long hours were wasted discussing whether first names should be used in the office. The advent of Michael Howard as Home Secretary coincided with a run of dramatic prison riots and escapes, and the punitive and political aspects of prison were emphasised at the expense of rehabilitation. This is Lewis’s account of prison politics, and of the events leading up to his eventual sacking by the new Home Secretary.

The most virulent viruses today are composed of information. In this information-driven age, the easiest way to manipulate the culture is through the media. Each of us pitches ideas every day. Regardless of what idea we're selling-or who we're selling it to-it all boils down to the act of stirring someone to join you, to agree to follow you. Yet we consistently underestimate how critical it is to recognize the role of the decision maker. Decisions are, after all, made by people; and people have needs and agendas, spoken and unspoken. Understanding these needs and agendas are critical to success in business. Kevin Allen's approach is not about persuading, but about creating a connection that assures a mutual win. By unearthing the true motivation or desire of the decision maker, Allen shows how to craft a story or message around it, creating a predictable and repeatable end result. Full of stories and examples, this entertaining book teaches you how to effectively find, connect, and finally to speak to the Hidden Agenda to win business unfailingly, every time.
Space expert Mike Bara looks at the secret space program of the American military that has been going on for over 60 years. Bara looks the Army Ballistic Missile Agency's proposed Project Horizon which was a study to determine the feasibility of constructing a scientific / military base on the Moon. On June 8, 1959, a group at the Army Ballistic Missile Agency (ABMA) produced for the U.S. Department of the Army a report entitled Project Horizon, A U.S. Army Study for the Establishment of a Lunar Military Outpost. The permanent outpost was predicted to cost $6 billion and was to become operational in December 1966 with twelve soldiers stationed at the Moon base. Wernher von Braun, head of ABMA, appointed Heinz-Hermann Koelle to head the project team at Redstone Arsenal. Their plans called for 147 early Saturn A-class rocket launches to loft spacecraft components for assembly in low Earth orbit at a spent-tank space station. A lunar landing-and-return vehicle would have shuttled up to 16 astronauts at a time to the base and back. While officially Project Horizon was scrapped by the military, or was it? Bara looks into the secret space program, the possibility of secret bases on the Moon and many rumors surrounding the military's secret projects in space. The book will ask and answer many questions. Was Wernher von Braun involved in the Roswell crash investigation? Why did he suddenly become fascinated with highly advanced theoretical physics propulsion systems during the Apollo years, and why did all of this public research suddenly "go black" in the early 1960s? Did NASA and the Pentagon know and expect to find evidence of alien bases on the Moon? Did the Apollo 12 astronauts deliberately damage the TV cameras in order to hide their explorations of one of these bases? What was the top secret "Chapel Bell" experiment on Apollo 16? Has teleportation been developed from captured alien technology and used to transport humans to secret NASA/DOD bases on Mars? Do space shuttle videos taken in the 1990s show proof of a highly advanced secret US space fleet? Does hacker Gary Mackinnon's discovery of defense department documents identifying "non-terrestrial officers" serving in space mean that the US has secret space platforms designed to fight a war with an alien race? And, have these secret military space platforms been photographed by civilian observers here on Earth?
