What is the Shaman's Mask? From the beginning, when human beings got together in tribes, they had a leader. This leader was the Shaman. Everyone in the tribe went to the shaman for healings, advice on disputes and the law, for spirituality and for communication with the ancestors and nature. Often, the Shaman engaged in metamorphosis as she or he would travel through the spiritual realms in order to obtain information to bring back to the tribe. During this time, the Shaman would often wear a mask as she or he became something else. These masks are meant to enter the astral plane, and to communicate with the spirit world. These masks are part of my Challenge 2017, art to raise awareness to humanitarian causes.
This book surveys the poetic endeavor of Keats and urges that his true poetry is uniquely constituted by being uttered through three artificial masks, rather than through the natural voice of his quotidian self. The first mask is formed by the attitudes and reality that ensue from a conscious commitment to the identity of poet as such. The second, called here the "Mask of Camelot," takes shape from Keats's acceptance and compelling use of the vogue for medieval imaginings that was sweeping across Europe in his time. The third, the "Mask of Hellas," eventuated from Keats's enthusiastic immersion in the rising tide of Romantic Hellenism. Keats's great achievement, the book argues, can only be ascertained by means of a resuscitation of the defunct critical category of "genius," as that informs his use of the masks. To validate this category, the volume is concerned throughout with the necessity of discriminating the truly poetic from the meretricious in Keats's endeavor. The Mask of Keats thus constitutes a criticism of and rebuke to the deconstructive approach, which must treat all texts and must entirely forgo the conception of quality.
Throughout the centuries, different cultures have established a variety of procedures for handling and disposing of corpses. Often the methods are directly associated with the deceased’s position in life, such as a pharaoh’s mummification in Egypt or the cremation of a Buddhist. Treatment by the living of the dead over time and across cultures is the focus of study. Burial arrangements and preparations are detailed, including embalming, the funeral service, storage and transport of the body, and forms of burial. Autopsies and the investigative process of causes of deliberate death are fully covered. Preservation techniques such as cryonic suspension and mummification are discussed, as well as a look at the “recycling” of the corpse through organ donation, donation to medicine, animal scavengers, cannibalism, and, of course, natural decay and decomposition. Mistreatments of a corpse are also covered.
