A surprise birthday gift plunged Joe Camp and his wife, Kathleen, into the world of horses as complete neophytes without a clue as to what horses needed or wanted. The Camps went searching for logic and sense in the rule books of traditional horse care and what they found was not what they had expected. Written for everyone who has ever loved a horse or even loved the idea of having a horse in their lives, this memoir leads us on a riveting voyage of discovery as Joe and Kathleen navigate uncharted, often politically incorrect territory on their way to achieving a true relationship with their horses. As the creator of the beloved Benji series, Joe has spent most of his life luring us into the heart and soul of a famous dog, but now in this engaging, emotional, and often humorous story, he deftly lures us into the heart and soul of a horse. In doing so, he exposes astonishing truths and unlocks the mystery of a majestic creature who has survived on Earth, without assistance, for fifty-five million years. In a single emotionally charged moment, Camp communes with his first horse, Cash, in a way that changes him and his relationship with horses forever. In his own words, as he stood alone with his back to this horse: The collar of my jacket was tickling the hairs on the back of my neck. And my heart was pounding. Then a puff of warm, moist air brushed my ear. My heart skipped a beat. He was really close. Then I felt his nose on my shoulder . . . I couldn’t believe it. Tears came out of nowhere and streamed down my cheeks. I had spoken to him in his own language, and he had listened . . . and he had chosen to be with me. He had said, I trust you. Ingeniously alternating between the stories of two people thrust into an unfamiliar, enigmatic realm and a fabled herd of wild horses brought to the New World centuries ago, Joe Camp’s valuable and inspiring book teaches us that the lessons he was learning apply not only to his horses but to life and to people as well–to all of us. From the Hardcover edition.

"Joe Camp is a master storyteller." - The New York Times The anxiously anticipated sequel to the National Best Seller The Soul of a Horse - Life Lessons from the Herd. "In Born Wild Joe Camp continues to demonstrate, in simple, unpretentious eloquence, how much we two-legged creatures can learn from horses. One of the rewards for reading the book is that it can be taken literally as the tale of a newborn horse fancier learning his craft, or as the road map for humanity on how to develop leadership in any herd. With humor, affection and discernment, Camp repeatedly underscores that true relationships are built on trust with any creatures."- Jack L. Kennedy, The Joplin Independent Born Wild is a study in trust. A story about molding your life to ask what’s in it for the other person, the dog, the cat, or in this case, the horse. instead of asking what’s in it for yourself. It’s a story about how the soul prospers from sharing, caring, relating, and fulfilling… because nothing can make you feel better than doing something good for another being. And it’s about the fact that there is nothing more important in life than love. This is the synthesis of this book and why it came into being. "Joe Camp's new book "Born Wild" is making me late everywhere...I can't put it down...Kudos Joe!” - Cate Crismani, Editor - True Cowboy Born Wild – The Soul of a Horse is another voyage into uncharted territory from the couple who had no horses and no clue just a few short years ago. A journey of discovery with wild horses going domestic and domestic horses going wild. And a federal agency going mad. Told as only Joe Camp can tell it. For everyone who has ever loved a horse or loved the idea of loving a horse. The author of the highly acclaimed National Best Seller The Soul of a Horse – Life Lessons from the Herd strikes again with an uplifting, inspirational love story of trust, tears and joy that will once again be changing lives for the better all across the planet. More Praise for Joe Camp’s writing: "One cannot help but be touched by Camp's love and sympathy for animals and by his eloquence on the subject." - Michael Korda - The Washington Post "I couldn’t imagine how Joe Camp would top The Soul of a Horse, but he did! Another eBook Nugget from The Soul of a Horse From Joe Camp, best-selling author of The Soul of a Horse: "All of our horses came to us with shoes nailed to their feet. They lived in stalls, ate from bags, all the things everyone told us to do because that's the way it has always been done. Two things changed everything. First, on the very first day our first horse, my Cash, came to us I took him to the round pen and attempted a Monty Roberts Join-Up. When I felt his moist warm breath on my ear, his nose on my shoulder tears came out of nowhere and streamed down my cheeks. I had spoken to him in his own language, and he had listened... and he had chosen to be with me. He had said, I trust you. From that moment I was no longer just a horse owner. I was a partner, a friend, a responsible leader and with that went the obligation and the desire to give him the very best life I could possibly give him. The problem was I didn't know what that was... so I immediately went about the business of finding out. "Come with us as we struggle through the information and mis-information to get to the truth about our horses' feet and ultimate health. What we discovered and what we did. And why." Claire Dorotik grew up riding, training, and loving horses, and in many ways understood horses before she understood people. While at the time her equine companions provided her tremendous solace, it was not until she entered her graduate program for psychology, and suffered her own intense personal trauma that the amazing way in which horses heal people was actually realized. ON THE BACK OF A HORSE: Harnessing The Healing Power Of The Human Equine Bond is an entrance into the spiritual world of horses, the devastation of raw human trauma, and the equine facilitated psychotherapy that can help heal it. Using narrative interviews and case studies of equine experts and psychology researchers, the reader is given entrance into the world of equine facilitated psychotherapy, and in doing so, taken on an epic journey to discover how it is that these magical creatures understand so much more about human trauma than we ourselves do. Using dramatic scenes, ON THE BACK OF A HORSE, gives the reader an understanding of just how people experience trauma, and why. What also emerges is an understanding of what horses do that, in many ways, prevents them from experiencing trauma as people do. While human fallacies illuminate themselves, and the debilitating effects of trauma become evident, the reader is bolstered by examples of equine communication, bonding and emotional expression, providing a beautiful example of just how these amazing creatures can help people overcome trauma.

Training with Treats - an EBook Nugget from the Soul of a Horse

With Relationship and Basic Training Locked in Treats Can Be an Excellent Way to Enhance Good Communication

Many trainers dislike the use of treats for training. Some even say we shouldn't talk to our horses. Training should all be based upon body language, just as the horses use with each other in the herd. We believe that the horse's language is important because once the horse understands that you know his language, once you have given him the choice of trusting you, of being in relationship with you, and once you have proven your leadership to the horse then he has a clear capability to grow and understand our language. To learn things he might not have ever had the chance to learn if he had remained in a herd somewhere. Sort of like you grew when you went off to school. I believe that horses love that opportunity to grow with you, and have fun with you... to learn new things and be rewarded in a positive way that they truly enjoy. I also believe that they love being able to speak to you, to initiate conversation. Like Cash does when he walks up and offers his big toothy smile, saying, Might I have a treat please? Teaching the horse that you understand his herd language - the use of pressure and release of that pressure - is a must in the beginning. But we now know that communication increases exponentially, both in comprehension and speed of learning, when treats are strategically used. I suppose it comes from so many years working with Benji before horses, and finally drawing the conclusion that whatever a dog can learn, a horse can learn as well because, with treats, they both want to learn.. And the horse will be just as happy about showing off as Benji is. Believe it or not, now all backed up by a new scientific study. Come with us as we step outside the box and discover how to give our horses a new and exciting way to learn, and communicate with us... and have fun! Whoa! Hold on there. Have we stumbled onto something that actually teaches the horse and the horse enjoys it, thinks it's fun? Yes, we did. And with this book we share it all with you. The stories you love and the information you need will always be with you. What Readers and Critics Are Saying About Joe Camp "Joe Camp is a master storyteller."
