In Kapitell wird die Rolle der graphischen Darstellung innerhalb der Statistik beleuchtet. Die Aufgabe statistischer Graphiken ist je nach Teilgebiet der Statistik unterschiedlicher Natur. So steht einmal die Präsentation von Daten, ein anderes Mal die Datenanalyse im Vordergrund. Die Charakteristiken graphischer Darstellungen ergeben sich aus der Art der visuellen Infor mationsverarbeitung beim Menschen. Auf die einzelnen Faktoren menschlicher Informations verarbeitung wird in Kapitel 2 eingegangen. Die graphische Wahrnehmung kristallisiert sich hierbei als Basis für die Beurteilung und Konzeption statistischer Graphiken heraus. Nur eine genaue Vorstellung über die Vorgänge beim Betrachten einer Graphik kann Aufschluß über die Vor-und Nachteile graphischer Darstellungen geben. Die Bemühungen iIi Richtung einer Standardisierung statistischer Graphiken stellen einen weiteren Schwerpunkt dieses Kapitels dar.
