Changing Venezuela by Taking Power

The History and Policies of the Chavez Government

Venezuela under Hugo Chavez could be a model for peaceful revolutionor, as this definitive history shows, it could all be undone by the spectres of the past. Since coming to power in 1998, the Chavez government has inspired both fierce internal debate and horror amongst Western governments accustomed to counting on an obeisant regime in the oil-rich state. Is Venezuela going through a peaceful, democratic "Bolivarian revolution," with the country's poor becoming politically engaged and beginning to share its oil wealth? Or is Chavez leading his country towards Latin American caudillismo at best, or Castro-style communism at worst? In this rich and resourceful study, Greg Wilpert exposes the self-serving logic behind much middle-class opposition to Venezuela's elected leader, and explains the real reason for their alarm. He argues that the Chavez government has instituted one of the world's most progressive constitutions, but warns that they have yet to overcome the dangerous spectres of the country's past: its culture of patronage and clientelism, its corruption, and its support for personality cultsall of them fuelled by the attention and interference of a succession of US administrations.

Conflict and Political Change in Venezuela

Venezuela has had a long and bloody history of military dictatorships. Yet, since 1958, it has developed one of the few effective, competitive democracies in Latin America. To explain this transformation Daniel H. Levine analyzes the development of modern mass-based political parties with pervasive organizations and commanding strong loyalties; the changing structure and content of social and political conflict; and the gradual emergence of common norms governing political behavior. This book does not pretend to be a general survey of Venezuelan politics. Rather, it is an attempt to understand, for both theoretical and practical purposes, the development of shared "rules of the game" for political action in a heterogeneous society. Once these norms are accepted by key elites, and then imposed on recalcitrant oppositions, they provide a means of controlling and managing political conflict without eliminating it. Mr. Levine's conclusions are based primarily on case studies of specific political conflicts. His study of conflicts over educational reform uncovers the conditions in which a traditional sector of society—Catholic groups and institutions—moved from violent, total opposition to the political system to a position of accommodation. In the second case study he examines the role of students in politics, with special reference to the integration of students in national patterns of conflict and opposition. A Grammar and Dictionary of the Timucua Language

Taken from the surviving contemporary documentary sources, Julian Granberry's volume describes the grammar and lexicon for the extinct 17th-century Timucua language of Central and North Florida and traces the origins of the 17th-century Timucua speakers and their language. Originally privately published in 1987, with limited circulation, this is the only available publication on the Timucuan language. It provides full grammatical analysis and complete lexical data, and it synthesizes both linguistic and archaeological data in order to provide a coherent picture of the Timucua peoples. Granberry traces the probable historical origins of Timucua speakers to a central Amazonian homeland at approximately 2,500 B.C. and proposes that Timucua speakers were responsible for introducing ceramic wares into North America.

The books in the Florida and the Caribbean Open Books Series demonstrate the University Press of Florida's long history of publishing Latin American and Caribbean studies titles that connect in and through Florida, highlighting the connections between the Sunshine State and its neighboring islands. Books in this series show how early explorers found and settled Florida and the Caribbean. They tell the tales of early pioneers, both foreign and domestic. They examine topics critical to the area such as travel, migration, economic opportunity, and tourism. They look at the growth of Florida and the Caribbean and the attendant pressures on the environment, culture, urban development, and the movement of peoples, both forced and voluntary. The Florida and the Caribbean Open Books Series gathers the rich data available in these architectural, archaeological, cultural, and historical works, as well as the travelogues and naturalists' sketches of the area in prior to the twentieth century, making it accessible for scholars and the general public alike. The Florida and the Caribbean Open Books Series is made possible through a grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities and the Andrew W. This book is a compilation of many writngs: poems, prose, essays and some dialogue about the invaluable life of sobriety; my continued recovery from alcoholism for over 26 + years; in the 12 Steps of Recovery and in union with God. However, this work is not limited to one subject. Some of this book is about my personality ( or lack of one ), my childhood, my family, my Christian faith and further about my continuing relationship with my wife and my association with some very "special friends"; also, containing a collage of thoughts and words about various other topics of "life" in sobriety. One day, at a meeting, I came in contact with a friend who knew about Xlibris. I made contact with them and the book was born. This book is not written in perfect English because I and most folks, do not speak or think in perfect English. The book is not printed in perfection, to wit: some works are in all Caps, some in partial Caps because it makes it easier for me and others to see. No disrespect is meant to anyone. This just reminds me that I am NOT PERFECT nor will I ever be. I hope you find value in my writings. That is the purpose for which I, inspired by the Lord, have written them. Thank you. May God grant your every need. With respect and love for you all, Fred

"Presenting work by some of the most distinguished scholars in their fields, Memory and the Modern in Celtic Literatures explores how Celtic literary traditions were both preserved and reconfigured in a post-medieval world. Poets and patrons engaging in fashionable poetic conceits; antiquarians rediscovering a literary heritage; bards defeating time itself with the language of utopia; satirists countering cultural hegemony with their sharp weapons of words; and writers revising tales of olden heroes to suit modern times and tastes - these are some of the protagonists in a complex drama of cultural preservation and change that plays out in the five case studies featured in this issue of the CSANA Yearbook."--BOOK JACKET.
