A Behind-the-Scenes Look at thte Real Lives of Surgical Residents

Category: Performing Arts
Find out what makes surgical residents tick… • Do surgeons talk about their sex lives while cutting a heart open? • How much time do surgical interns actually spend in the OR? • Do surgeons respond to death as objective doctors or as compassionate people? • How do they react when asked to save the life of an abuser or a criminal or an addict? Since its debut, the ABC medical drama Grey’s Anatomy has raised compelling questions like these. With an emphasis on the personal lives of the surgical interns, residents, and attending physicians, the show has generated a flurry of interest in how these medical professionals really make it through one of the most rigorous educational programs around. How much of the medical drama seen in Grey’s Anatomy is pure entertainment, and how much is an accurate reflection of life both in and out of the OR? Here, a well-known medical journalist provides some answers. He examines a group of new surgical residents at a major teaching hospital in the Pacific Northwest as they tackle the roller-coaster ride of long hours, fascinating procedures, mundane office tasks, and emotional ups and downs that comprise the life of a student of surgery.
Can we deny being disciples of Grey’s Anatomy? No, in faith we can’t. Grey’s Anatomy has changed our lives: we now know what it means to clamp the aorta, and we’ve become experts at performing a tracheotomy right on the sidewalk, on someone who was flattened by a truck, using just our Parker pen. Grey’s Anatomy’s family—Meredith, Cristina, Owen, Derek and all the other doctors—has become our own family. We can forgive them anything—escapades, affairs, wacky diagnoses and outrageous mistakes in the or. Anything, except one thing: not being real.
A sexy, high-concept, behind-the-scenes peek at the lives and loves of Seattle Grace's most popular doctors . . . On ABC's mega-hit Grey's Anatomy, when surgical interns Meredith, Cristina, Izzie, George, and Alex (not to mention neurosurgeon Derek, aka Dr. McDreamy) arent putting in long hours at Seattle Grace Hospital, theyre flirting, gossiping, and drowning their sorrows at the Emerald City Bar. In one location, Nurse Debbie sees it all; in the other, Joe the bartender hears it all . . . Grey's Anatomy is styled as two books in one -- read from one side to get Debbie's hospital scuttlebutt, and from the other for Joe's alcohol-fueled tidbits. Notes from the Nurse's Station and Overheard at the Emerald City Bar are packed with new information on pivotal events. This is the book the show's millions of fans cant wait to read.
ABOUT THE BOOK Borrowing the title from a famous medical text, Gray's Anatomy, ABC's Grey's Anatomy premiered mid-season in 2005 following Desperate Housewives on Sunday nights, as noted by "When the Scrubs Come Off" in New York Magazine. Tales of Sex and Surgery in New York Times calls it a mix of Sex and the City and ER, and praises main character Meredith Grey and her fellow surgical interns for having meaningful work, especially compared to the characters of Desperate Housewives or The O.C., two popular shows at the time of the Grey's premiere. As discussed in Tales of Sex and Surgery,Greys Anatomy taps into the hero-doctor figure, an image lost in an era of 15-minute appointments and medical treatments decided by insurance companies. Unlike Meredith Grey, your surgeon doesn't care that you both wore the same shoes that day. What is unrealistic about the show makes it successful. Meredith, Cristina, and Izzie are more focused on their career ambitions and less about how to balance their jobs, homes, and boyfriends with time left for themselves. These girls believe they can have it all and go for it. MEET THE AUTHOR EmmaLee has been writing since grade school, but professionally since 2009. She enjoys young adult novels, trampolines, and tea parties. EXCERPT FROM THE BOOK The past and present are irreparably connected in Grey's Anatomy. This is demonstrated from the beginning, as the opening lines discuss Meredith's mother, who had been a great surgeon. Throughout the season, Meredith, Izzie, and Alex all reveal bits of their past that have pushed them to become better surgeons: Meredith's mother told her she did not have what it takes. Izzie grew up in a trailer park and had to wait tables to pay for college. Alex's father was an addict. Meredith's mother represents a deep past. She was a great surgeon at Seattle Grace. The Chief knew her well. Great things are expected from Meredith because she is Ellis Grey's daughter. Everyday she walks down the hallways her mother once commanded and has to find a way to live up to that past. At the same time, her mother is losing her present to Alzheimers and becoming deeply entrenched in her past, which carries extreme pain for Meredith. Jamie Dornan came to the role of Christian Grey in the motion picture Fifty Shades of Grey as Hollywood's answer to a prayer when the original actor, Charlie Hunnam, left the picture a scant three weeks before production was set to begin. But the reality was that Dornan's being thrust into “Instant” celebrity was more than a decade in the making chronicled in entertaining depth in the Inside Grey's Anatomy: The Unauthorized Biography of Jamie Dornan by New York Times best-selling author Marc Shapiro. Dornan' story is ripe with pathos, talent, determination and luck. After losing his mother at an early age, Dornan struggled with frustration and aimlessness as he attempted to find his way in the world. Luck entered the picture when he stumbled into the world of international modeling where, after being dubbed The Golden Torso, he reluctantly rode the glitz and glamour, making money, dating the most sought-after women but ultimately chaffing as he dreamed of becoming an actor. His determination finally kicked open the door with important works in both television and film. Finally the phone rang early one morning and Christian Grey was born.
The classic medical text known as Gray’s Anatomy is one of the most famous books ever written. Now, on the 150th anniversary of its publication, acclaimed science writer and master of narrative nonfiction Bill Hayes has written the fascinating, never-before-told true story of how this seminal volume came to be. A blend of history, science, culture, and Hayes’s own personal experiences, The Anatomist is this author’s most accomplished and affecting work to date. With passion and wit, Hayes explores the significance of Gray’s Anatomy and explains why it came to symbolize a turning point in medical history. But he does much, much more. Uncovering a treasure trove of forgotten letters and diaries, he illuminates the astonishing relationship between the fiercely gifted young anatomist Henry Gray and his younger collaborator H. V. Carter, whose exquisite anatomical illustrations are masterpieces of art and close observation. Tracing the triumphs and tragedies of these two extraordinary men, Hayes brings an equally extraordinary era–the mid-1800s–unforgettably to life. But the journey Hayes takes us on is not only outward but inward–through the blood and tissue and organs of the human body– for The Anatomist chronicles Hayes’s year as a student of classical gross anatomy, performing with his own hands the dissections and examinations detailed by Henry Gray 150 years ago. As Hayes’s acquaintance with death deepens, he finds his understanding and appreciation of life deepening in unexpected and profoundly moving ways. The Anatomist is more than just the story of a book. It is the story of the human body, a story whose beginning and end we all know and share but that, like all great stories, is infinitely rich in between.
