After the ?rst two CHES Workshops held in Massachusetts, and the third held in Europe, this is the ?rst Workshop on the West Coast of the United States. There was a record number of submissions this year and in response the technical program was extended to 3 days. As is evident by the papers in these proceedings, there have been again many excellent submissions. Selecting the papers for this year’s CHES was not an easy task, and we regret that we could not accept many contributions due to the limited availability of time. There were 101 submissions this year, of which 39 were selected for presentation. We continue to observe a steady increase over previous years: 42 submissions at CHES ’99, 51 at CHES 2000, and 66 at CHES 2001. We interpret this as a continuing need for a workshop series that c- bines theory and practice for integrating strong security features into modern communicationsandcomputerapplications. Inadditiontothesubmittedcont- butions, Jean-Jacques Quisquater (UCL, Belgium), Sanjay Sarma (MIT, USA) and a panel of experts on hardware random number generation gave invited talks. As in the previous years, the focus of the Workshop is on all aspects of cr- tographic hardware and embedded system security. Of special interest were c- tributionsthatdescribenewmethodsfore?cienthardwareimplementationsand high-speed software for embedded systems, e. g. , smart cards, microprocessors, DSPs, etc. CHES also continues to be an important forum for new theoretical and practical ?ndings in the important and growing ?eld of side-channel attacks.

These are the proceedings of the Eighth Workshop on Cryptographic Hardware and Embedded Systems (CHES 2006) held in Yokohama, Japan, October 10-13, 2006. The CHES workshophas been sponsored by the International Association for Cryptographic Research (IACR) since 2004. The ?rst and the second CHES workshops were held in Worcester in 1999 and 2000, respectively, followed by Paris in 2001, San Francisco Bay Area in 2002, Cologne in 2003, Boston in 2004 and Edinburgh in 2005. This is the ?rst CHES workshop held in Asia. This year,a totalof 112 paper submissionswerereceived.The reviewprocess was therefore a delicate and challenging task for the Program Committee m- bers. Each paper was carefully read by at least three reviewers, and submissions with a Program Committee member as a (co-)author by at least ?ve reviewers. The review process concluded with a two week Web discussion process which resulted in 32 papers being selected for presentation. Unfortunately, there were a number of good papers that could not be included in the program due to a lack of space. We would like to thank all the authors who submitted papers to CHES 2006. In addition to regular presentations, we were very fortunate to have in the programthreeexcellentinvitedtalksgivenbyKazumaroAoki(NTT)on“Integer Factoring Utilizing PC Cluster,” Ari Juels (RSA Labs) on “The Outer Limits of RFID Security” and Ahmad Sadeghi (Ruhr University Bochum) on “Challenges for Trusted Computing.” The program also included a rump session, chaired by Christof Paar, featuring informal presentations on recent results.

Since 1999, the workshop on Cryptographic Hardware and Embedded Systems (CHES) is the foremost international scienti?c event dedicated to all aspects of cryptographic hardware and security in embedded systems. Its 12th edition was held in Santa Barbara, California, USA, August 17–20, 2010. Exceptionally this year, it was co-located with the 30th International Cryptology Conference (CRYPTO). This co-location provided unique interaction opportunities for the communities of both events. As in previous years, CHES was sponsored by the International Association for Cryptologic Research (IACR). The workshopreceived 108 submissions, from 28 di?erent countries,of which the Program Committee selected 30 for presentation. Each submission was - viewed by at least 4 committee members, for a total of 468 reviews. Two invited talks completed the technical program. The ?rst one, given by Ivan Damg? ard and Markus Kuhn, was entitled “Is Theoretical Cryptography Any Good in Practice?”, and presented jointly to the CRYPTO and CHES audiences, on Wednesday, August 18, 2010. The second one, given by Hovav Shacham, was entitled “Cars and Voting Machines: Embedded Systems in the Field. ” The Program Committee agreed on giving a best paper award to Alexandre Berzati, C´ ecile Canovas-Dumas and Louis Goubin, for their work “Public Key Perturbation of Randomized RSA Implementations. ” These authors will also be invitedtosubmitanextendedversionoftheirpapertotheJournalofCryptology, together with the authors of two other contributions. CHES 2009, the 11th workshop on Cryptographic Hardware and Embedded Systems, was held in Lausanne, Switzerland, September 6–9, 2009. The wo- shop was sponsored by the International Association for Cryptologic Research (IACR). Data security is an important requirement for almost all, if not all, information-oriented applications such as e-commerce, digital signature, secure Internet, etc. All these services use encrypted data.
