Type 1 Diabetes - the body attacks and destroys the pancreatic beta cells, which make insulin. In the absence of these cells, insulin, the nutrients in food - and specifically glucose - cannot properly get in to the cells of the body and thus be used a source of energy. Type 2 Diabetes - there is both a decrease in the relative amount of insulin that the body can make and a decrease in the ability of insulin to act. This reduction in insulin action is termed insulin resistance - associated with excess weight, high blood pressure, high cholesterol levels and increased risk of cardiovascular diseases including heart attack and stroke.
