Many have died in the Australian bush who might have lived had they known the appropriate survival skills. Bushcraft covers all areas of survival and camping activities: making ropes and cords, building huts, camp craft, finding food and water, making maps, starting fires, tying knots, and fashioning hunting and trapping gear—virtually every technique required to stay alive in the woods. With over 400 black-and-white illustrations and photographs, this book explains how to make use of natural materials found locally in any area, conserving instead of destroying native flora and fauna. It describes many of the skills used by primitive man, adding to these the skills necessary for modern man’s survival, such as methods for determining time and direction. The author, who popularized the term “bushcraft,” claims its practice has many unexpected results. By developing adaptability and honing the five senses, it will also improve your self-esteem and your ability to overcome difficulties in everyday tasks. The practice of bushcraft encourages self-confidence and counters the narrowing influence of modern living by broadening your horizons. Bushcraft is a clear, accurate, and reliable resource for anyone who wishes to face nature on its own terms with just a knife and this book.

ÊIf my present reader happens to be a Boy Scout or a scout-master who wants the scouts to build a tower for exhibition purposes, he can do so by following the directions here given, but if there is real necessity for haste in the erection of this tower, of course we cannot build one as tall as we might where we have more time. With a small tower all the joints may be quickly lashed together with strong, heavy twine, rope, or even wire; and in the wilderness it will probably be necessary to bind the joints with pliable roots, or cordage made of bark or withes; but as this is not a book on woodcraft we will suppose that the reader has secured the proper material for fastening the joints of the frame of this signal-tower and he must now shoulder his axe and go to the woods in order to secure the necessary timber. First let him cut eight straight polesÑthat is, as straight as he can find them. These poles should be about four and one half inches in diameter at their base and sixteen and one half feet long. After all the branches are trimmed off the poles, cut four more sticks each nine feet long and two and a half or three inches in diameter at the base; when these are trimmed into shape one will need twenty six or seven more stout sticks each four and one half feet long for braces and for flooring for the platform.

This brilliant and completely addictive book is perfect for anyone with a yen to taste danger, enjoy the freedom of the outdoors, imagine risk, or even just have fun. Less the Dangerous Book for Boys, it is more the Dangerous Book for Boys Who Never Grew Up. From potentially useful abilities like how to find water anywhere (even in a desert), how to treat shock, heatstroke and frostbite, build a shelter from branches and leaves, and fish with your shirt, to fascinating techniques that are unlikely ever to be needed like how to predict the weather from plants, survive a stampede or wildfire, swim through burning oil, jump from a moving train or cross a fast-moving river, this book details over 300 skills that seem absolutely essential to know whilst you're reading the book. It even details apocalyptic survival solutions in the event of a massive tsunami or nuclear accident, and, if all else fails, describes how to extract a natural painkiller from tree bark. Written in a wry, humorous way, this book could be used as a practical guide, but will invariably have a lot of appeal to armchair adventurers as an entertaining reference. It will make the perfect gift for teenage boys, twentysomething males and overgrown kids of all ages. Full colour throughout, it has photographs, illustrations, diagrams and lists, which make it ideal for opening at random to discover something interesting, as well as reading through from cover to cover.

With over forty years since its original printing, and over 30,000 copies sold, this bestselling guide still remains a trusted and much-consulted reference for those interested in identifying, foraging and growing wild plants for food and medicine. Now Some Useful Wild Plants is back in print for a new generation of foragers and herbalists. Some Useful Wild Plants contains sections on useful herbs, trees, berries and seaweeds, as well as commentary on avoiding poisonous species. Pick the young tender leaves of orach, salsify and miner's lettuce for a delicious and vitamin-rich spring salad or stir-fry. Concoct a cherry bark and licorice fern syrup to soothe a sore throat. Repel insects naturally using sage oil or vanilla leaf. From alder to yarrow, each featured plant has useful descriptors for identification and details on how to harvest, as well as how the plant is traditionally used for medicine by First Nations, pioneers and contemporary herbalists. Clear line drawings are provided to assist foragers in accurate identification. Directions are included for the preparation of ointments, salves, poultices, compresses and tinctures. Dan Jason also addresses sustainability when foraging to ensure that harvesting supports the continuous growth of the plant and the natural environment.
